Horses can tell a genuine emotional state from a performed one, just from a person's face or voice. In studies, they picked up on it before the person had words for what they were feeling. There's no talking our way past a horse. A horse isn't listening to what we say, it's reading how we show up.

Their nervous systems syncs with ours.

Research using heart rate monitors has found that a person's and a horse's heart rhythms start to fall into sync during an interaction. It's part of why the shift we feel in the arena doesn't feel abstract. Something in our body is actually changing, not just something in our head.

One recent study found horses reacted to human stress hormones carried in scent alone, before any outward sign appeared. This is the piece that matters most for leaders: the gap between how we look and how we feel is usually the first thing a horse notices and often the first thing our team notices too.
